Run-of-river power plant India: Supported 2022

The project is a run-of-river power plant with an installed capacity of 300 MW. The detour dam of the project is located on the Baspa River, at Kuppa in Himachal Pradesh. The powerhouse is located at Karcham village in Kinnaur district. The project activity is an initiative of Jaiprakash Hydro Power Limited (JHPL),a part of Jaypee Group. Jaypee is a well-known Indian business group and had entered into an agreement with the Himachal Pradesh state government to implement the project. The dam is located at an altitude of 2600 meters, the highest altitude achievable in India for such a structure. The objective of the project activity is to generate electricity using renewable hydropower and sell it to the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB). Estimated to save over one million tons of CO2 equivalent per year, it is a large-scale project. The project is one of the largest hydropower projects implemented by the private sector in India.
